The less than 65 years of age mortality (premature death rate) is higher in Okinawa than any other prefectures. Therefore smoking prevention education from elementary school level can be considered as crucial for the reduction of premature death rate and extension of healthy life expectancy in Okinawa. The aim of this study was to examine the most effective methods of smoking prevention education. First of all, as a pilot study, we conducted a session of health education including smoking prevention education at elementary school A in Okinawa prefecture. After the health education class, we conducted a questionnaire-survey using “the Kano Test for Social Nicotine Dependence (hereafter KTSND). The average KTSND score was 4.58±3.21. As we found a student who smokes electronic cigarettes, in the main study we changed the survey method by adding an item for new heat-not-burn tobaccos and electronic cigarettes use and carried out the questionnaires (KTSND) to assess the situations before and after the health education lectures.
