Talk, i. e, the spoken word, is now the nucleus for debate. Archetypical examples include Hideo Den (first with Kyodo News Service. TBS, later a member of the House of Concilors) in the 60's, and Tetsuya Chikushi (first with Asahi News, Asahi TV, then TBS news commentator) from the latter half of the 70's. In the summer of 2000, Osaka-based Kiyoshi Kuroda (1931-2000 with Osaka Yomiuri News) passed away, mourned by his many fans, friends, and acquaintances throughout Japan. Kuroda was known for writing an average of five pages a day over his 14 year career as a TV and radio commentator. This account sheds light on Kiyoshi Kuroda as a news commentator and in conjunction, questions, on the eve of the 21st Century, the viability of Japan's brand of national-interest and major business focused journalism.
