The project arose out of the perceived needs of Okinawa University students to have access to the lexical resources required to be able to talk about their lives and environment to those with different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. The CALL project dictionary items are organised around themes. This form of organisation capitalises on what researchers know about the nature of memory and the network-like organisation of the mental lexicon. The value of using visuals (photos and short videos) is attested by research which demonstrates the positive value of imagery in vocabulary learning. Research into learning styles has found that learners have preferred learning styles. By adopting a multi-sensory approach to vocabulary presentation, the project aims to cater for students with different learning styles. The paper also discusses some of the problems of defining the target terms, in terms of translation, definition and description, and syntactic issues. The CALL dictionary project currently uses the Okinawa University CALL lab. This allows target items and short texts to be presented in multiple languages, in spoken and written form.
